What to do in Barcelona before hotel check-in: a practical hour-by-hour guide

You land in Barcelona before noon. A low-cost flight from London, Berlin or Milan touching down at 9-10 AM, an AVE from Madrid arriving at Sants at 11:15, an overnight bus from Valencia dropping you at Estació del Nord at 8. You take the metro, come out of the station, and here comes the first letdown of the trip: hotel reception won't let you check in until 3 PM.

You have four, five, six hours ahead — the sunniest hours of the day — and a trolley or big backpack that fits nowhere, that you can't take into Casa Batlló or La Pedrera, that you don't want to drag along the Rambla or up the metro steps, and that the hotel front desk sometimes stores but sometimes won't (and when they do, the back room is a mess and you get the bag back whenever someone at reception has a moment).

Why not to walk the first hours with your luggage

Barcelona isn't a luggage-friendly city. 3. 13:00-14:30 — set menu lunch in the neighbourhood (Cerveseria Catalana, Tapas 24, Cinc Sentits if your budget's on holiday).
4. 14:30-15:30 — La Pedrera (Passeig de Gràcia 92, entry €28), a 2-minute walk from the shop.

• Flight to T1/T2 at El Prat → R2 Nord direct to Passeig de Gràcia (30 min, €4.90) or L9 Sud + transfer to Urquinaona via L1 (~45 min, €5.15). Both options get your bag locked before the first hour after landing is out.
• AVE / Renfe to Sants → L3 to Passeig de Gràcia (2 stops, 5 min) or L1 from Sants Estació to Urquinaona (5 stops, 12 min).
• Bus to Estació del Nord → L1 (Arc de Triomf) to Urquinaona (1 stop). Also walkable in 12 min.
• Bus to Fabra i Puig → L1 to Urquinaona (13 stops, 25 min).
• Cruise Terminal (Port Vell) → bus 21 to Colom, then L3 from Drassanes to Passeig de Gràcia; or 10-15 min taxi to Urquinaona.
