La Mercè 2026 in Barcelona: guide, venues and 24/7 luggage storage at Urquinaona and Passeig de Gràcia

Four days, over 300 free activities, two million people on the streets. From Tuesday September 22 to Friday September 25, 2026 Barcelona celebrates La Mercè, the city's main festival — the great send-off of Barcelona's summer, with the patron saint Verge de la Mercè as the reason and the whole city as the stage. Correfocs through the Gothic Quarter, castellers on Plaça Sant Jaume, neighbourhood giants, sardanes, free concerts at Bogatell and Fòrum, and the closing Piromusical, which in 2026 moves venues to Bogatell beach.

If you're coming to Barcelona for La Mercè — from Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza or southern France — or if you're just passing through and your dates coincide, you have long days ahead. And it all starts well before hotel check-in.

What La Mercè is

La Mercè — «les Festes de la Mercè» in Catalan — is Barcelona's city festival, declared a Festival of National Interest. It's held around September 24, the day of the patron saint Mare de Déu de la Mercè, and fills 3-4 days with activities across the city: Catalan popular culture (castellers, gegants, correfoc, sardanes), free concerts featuring international headliners, family activities, open-doors at museums and institutional buildings, and religious acts at the basilica of La Mercè.

It's the biggest concentration of free events all year in Barcelona: over 300 activities, around 100 concerts, and an estimated attendance of 2 million people spread across squares, beaches, Gothic Quarter streets and the open spaces at Fòrum and Bogatell.

2026: dates and what's new

This year La Mercè runs from September 22 to 25. Some highlights for 2026:

• Closing Piromusical — the big news of this edition: the Piromusical, traditionally at Avinguda Maria Cristina in front of the Font Màgica, moves to Bogatell beach in 2026 (source: betevé). Fireworks synced to music, drone shows and projections — open and free.
• Portes Obertes: free access to institutional buildings closed to the public the rest of the year (Ajuntament, Palau de la Generalitat, Casa de la Ciutat).
• BAM (Barcelona Acció Musical) — the free-concert cycle bringing indie and emerging talent to the city.
• Mercè Arts de Carrer (MAC) — open-air theatre, circus and dance in squares and parks.
• Diada Castellera — the big diada on Plaça de Sant Jaume, with Catalonia's top colles.
• Correfoc de la Mercè — the fire parade of dracs and diables down Via Laietana, with pyrotechnics and drums.

The main venues

La Mercè takes over four major city areas, all within walking distance of the two Locker City shops:

With two shops we cover the arc where La Mercè concentrates: you arrive via Passeig de Gràcia or Urquinaona, drop luggage, and walk to the correfoc, the castellers or the BAM stage without carrying weight for hours.

Why you need to drop the luggage if you come for La Mercè

La Mercè is a full-day plan: events start at midday, continue through the afternoon in Ciutat Vella and stretch into the night with free concerts at Bogatell and the closing Piromusical on Sunday. If you arrive in Barcelona by train, bus or cruise, you have hours ahead of you before hotel check-in (standard 15:00).

Five or six hours dragging a suitcase between Plaça Sant Jaume, Bogatell, La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia — with closed streets, capacity limits and correfoc on Via Laietana — doesn't work. The practical option is to drop luggage in the centre on arrival, head straight to the festival, and pick up whenever it suits. Five euros for the bag, hands free, full day for La Mercè.

How Locker City works: 100% self-service, 24/7

Both shops are open 24 hours a day, unstaffed. Everything on the phone:

1. Book on the phone — before arriving or on the train. Pick shop (Passeig de Gràcia or Urquinaona), size and hours.
2. Personal QR code. Each booking generates a unique QR. Scan at the kiosk, the locker opens.
3. Drop the bag, close. Pickup receipt to your phone by email.
4. Come back whenever within your booked hours. Ideal if the Piromusical ends at 23:00 at Bogatell and you need to pick up before the hotel or the last Renfe.

Practical tips for La Mercè

• Book the locker in advance. During La Mercè, storage and hotel occupancy spikes. Two-three days ahead secures a spot.
• Download the official programme. The City Council website publishes the full day-by-day PDF. Consult before coming.
• Watch transport. Metro and bus reinforce schedules and frequencies. Some Ciutat Vella streets close during correfoc and diades.
• Correfoc = clothes you don't mind burning. Long-sleeve shirt, long trousers, cap, closed shoes, scarf. Sparks are guaranteed.
• Arrive early to the popular events. The castellers on Sant Jaume and the Piromusical at Bogatell fill well before official start time.
• Phone battery. Videos, photos, programme maps, coordination with friends — charger or power bank in the daypack.
• If you can't find lodging in Barcelona, consider Badalona, Sant Cugat, Sitges, Castelldefels or L'Hospitalet — all with direct Rodalies or metro. Drop the bag at Passeig de Gràcia or Urquinaona on arrival, live La Mercè and pick up before heading back.

Getting there

By train — Renfe arrives at Estació de França, Passeig de Gràcia and Sants. Madrid-Barcelona AVE ends at Sants. Rodalies and Renfe connect with Girona, Tarragona, Lleida and the Mediterranean arc.

By bus — Estació del Nord serves ALSA, Alsina Graells and international lines. FlixBus and BlaBlaBus have central stops.

By plane — El Prat Airport (BCN). Aerobús direct to Plaça de Catalunya (35 min) — five minutes on foot from our Urquinaona shop.

By cruise — Port cruise terminal. Sightseeing bus and taxi to the centre (10-15 min).

Within Barcelona during La Mercè — Metro, commuter train (Rodalies) and bus reinforce service on festival days. Bicing (bikes) and e-scooters are a quick alternative for the Ciutat Vella–Passeig de Gràcia–Bogatell axis.
