Luggage storage next to Casa Batlló and La Pedrera: how to visit Gaudí's houses without your suitcase

You've booked a ticket to Casa Batlló for 11:30 AM. You come straight from the hotel — or worse, straight from the airport with the trolley still in your hand —, you reach the entrance at Passeig de Gràcia 43, and the door staff stop you: "No entry with suitcases or backpacks larger than 40×30×20 cm". You look around. There's no luggage room inside the house. No cloakroom. No official solution. And your time slot starts in 15 minutes.

It happens to dozens of visitors every day at the two modernista masterpieces on Passeig de Gràcia. This post exists precisely so it doesn't happen to you.

What exactly Casa Batlló and La Pedrera don't allow

The official Casa Batlló (Passeig de Gràcia 43) policy is clear and strict: no entry with suitcases, trolleys, big backpacks or bulky items. The practical hand-luggage limit is around 40×30×20 cm — the size of a daypack. Standard cabin luggage (55×40×20 cm) already exceeds it. There's no free cloakroom or in-house storage operated by Casa Batlló. If you turn up with a suitcase, you don't get in.

La Pedrera (Passeig de Gràcia 92, also known as Casa Milà) applies the same policy. The visit includes the rooftop with Gaudí's famous chimneys, and the operator can't allow suitcases due to space on the interior staircases and the terrace itself. Same practical limit: small backpack yes, cabin size no.

The added problem: the two houses are 500 metres from each other on the same side of Passeig de Gràcia. Most visitors combine them in the same morning. If you don't sort the luggage before the first one, you won't get into the second one either.

Where we are: literally between the two

• 30 minutes from the airport via the direct R2 Nord (your bag is at the shop before you'd reach most central hotels)

The location isn't accidental. When you choose where to place a luggage store in Barcelona, criterion number one is "walking distance to the traveller's pain point". Here the pain is exactly this: entering Gaudí's houses without carrying your luggage.

Option A — Intensive morning (3.5 hours)

1. 10:00 — Drop the bag at Locker City Passeig de Gràcia.
2. 10:15-11:30 — Casa Batlló (Fast Pass online booking, €45-49). Gaudí's iconic "sleeping dragon", with the ceramic-scale facade, wave-like chimneys, and main hall with the Diagonal window.
3. 11:30-12:00 — Walk the Manzana de la Discordia (Passeig de Gràcia 41-43): Casa Amatller, Casa Lleó Morera, Casa Mulleras — three modernista contemporaries of Gaudí competing in the same block. Casa Amatller offers chocolate tasting in the entrance hall.
4. 12:00-13:00 — Walk 500 metres up to La Pedrera (Premium online booking, €42). Rooftop with the warrior chimneys, attic with an exhibition space, inner courtyard bathed in light.
5. 13:00-14:30 — Lunch in the neighbourhood. Recommendations: Cerveseria Catalana (Mallorca 236, 3 min walk, medium-high level tapas), Tapas 24 (Diputació 269, from the Ferran Adrià group), Casa Alfonso (Roger de Llúria 6, classic Barcelona).
6. 14:30 — Pick up the bag. To the hotel.

Option B — Relaxed morning (5 hours)

Add to Option A: Fundació Antoni Tàpies between La Pedrera and lunch (Aragó 255, 15 min, €8 entry), or the Museu del Modernisme Català (Balmes 48, 20 min, €10 entry). Both museums let you extend the theme without forcing you to change neighbourhood.

Option C — Photography and architecture without going in

If your budget doesn't stretch to both entries (Batlló + Pedrera can exceed €70), the outdoor architectural route is just as memorable: facades of the two houses, Manzana de la Discordia, ensanche buildings like the Casa de les Punxes (Diagonal 420) and Casa Comalat (Diagonal 442). With the bag locked away, in morning light, no rush. Free.

Specific tips for Gaudí's houses

• Book the tickets online days or weeks ahead. In high season (June-September), the good time slots (10:30-12:00) sell out early. At the on-site ticket office you don't just pay more, you might find nothing available.
• The time slot on the ticket is strict. Casa Batlló lets you in within a 30-minute window around your slot. If you turn up with the suitcase and have to go round the block to drop it, you can lose your turn. Go to the shop first, house after.
• Bring battery for your phone. The Casa Batlló Video Guide visit lasts ~1h15 with the phone constantly in your hand. Charger or power bank in the daypack.
• Valuables from the big suitcase — DSLR, jewellery, cash — take them out and carry them in the daypack. The locker is secure but anything of high value is always better with you.
• After La Pedrera, don't walk back to the shop. It's 500 m from the shop, and La Pedrera closes its upper level at specific times. If you leave pickup for 14:30, have some margin; 15:00 is better.
• Change of clothes in the suitcase. Barcelona in summer is July sun; La Pedrera's rooftop reaches 33°C with no shade. Spare t-shirt and sunscreen in the daypack, sweater in the suitcase stays locked.

What about Sagrada Família tomorrow?

Sagrada Família applies the same luggage policy. But it's 20 min by metro (L2 from Passeig de Gràcia to Sagrada Família, 5 direct stops). If you combine Sagrada Família with Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on the same day, leave the luggage at Locker City Passeig de Gràcia for the whole morning (7-8 hour booking), do Sagrada Família first thing (9:00), come back by metro to Eixample, and finish with Batlló + Pedrera before hotel check-in.

Closing

Modernista Barcelona is best enjoyed light. Gaudí designed for slow walking, for eyes upward, for entering and leaving without luggage. His houses follow that logic: no internal storage because they weren't designed for the trolley traveller — they were designed for the ensanche neighbour walking out in street shoes.
